The Dessert I Keep Close For Summer

There are a few desserts that feel like summer to me. Strawberry sheet cake. Peach cobbler. Banana pudding.
They are not complicated desserts, and I think that is part of why I love them. They feel generous without needing to be impressive. Strawberry sheet cake especially feels like the kind of recipe to keep close when strawberries are beautiful. It belongs at family dinners, summer gatherings, birthdays, or any ordinary day that could use something sweet in the middle of it.
I like a dessert that can be made in a pan. Served from the pan. Shared from the pan. There is something honest about that. It does not need to look precious to make people happy. It just needs to taste like summer and be easy to share. Fresh berries do a lot of the work. Simple ingredients do the rest. The best summer food often has that quality: useful, beautiful, and not overcomplicated.
That is the way I want the kitchen to feel this time of year. Fresh herbs on the counter. Citrus nearby. Wooden cutting boards being used. Simple serving bowls. Cast iron on the stove. A cake in a pan because people are going to eat it. I do not think every recipe has to become an event. Sometimes the best recipes become part of the season because they are reliable. They show up when people gather. They work for birthdays. They work for family dinners. They work when someone brings beautiful berries home and you know exactly what to make.
That is the kind of recipe I like to keep close. One that says: this is simple, this is good, and there is enough to share.
