Water Shoes Are Not Optional: A Limestone-Lake Shore Guide

August 12, 2026

A Central Texas lake shore rarely behaves like a sandy beach. Around Lake Travis, the footing is often limestone: beautiful, pale, uneven, and capable of being sharp or slick. Water shoes are not an accessory here. They are basic equipment.

Good lake days begin by respecting the place as it is rather than expecting it to behave like somewhere else.

A Neso Grande sun shelter and Danner water shoes on the uneven limestone shoreline of Lake Travis.

Protect your footing

Choose secure water shoes with a closed or protective sole and enough traction for wet rock. I have worn this pair of water shoes for years, and they have been a dependable choice for the uneven limestone around Lake Travis. Flip-flops are useful away from the water but can slide, twist, or float away when the footing becomes uneven. Move slowly when entering unfamiliar water; limestone ledges and submerged rocks can change quickly.

Read the shoreline before settling in

Reservoir levels rise and fall, exposing different rock, mud, vegetation, and debris. After floods or strong inflows, branches, metal, glass, dock pieces, and other hazards may appear where the shore was previously clear. Do not assume a familiar access point is unchanged.

Bring shade and water

Texas sun reflects from both rock and water. For Lake Travis, I use the Neso Grande portable sun shelter because it can be set up on uneven, rocky ground where a conventional canopy may be awkward. Drinking water, protective clothing, a hat, sunglasses, and broad-spectrum sunscreen make a longer visit safer and more comfortable. Check local rules before setting up, and anchor portable shade according to its instructions without blocking access.

Let official conditions lead

Check weather, water-quality notices, park or access closures, and local lake guidance before leaving home. Never enter moving floodwater or cross a closed barrier. If you hear thunder, leave the water and move to a substantial building or hard-topped enclosed vehicle; a canopy is shade, not lightning protection.

The limestone is part of what makes these lakes beautiful. Knowing how to move across it is part of belonging here responsibly.

With love and intention,

Jennifer
