How I Am Learning the Birds From My Own Porch

August 23, 2026

I have loved birds since childhood. Over the years that affection has deepened into something steadier: watching them, listening to them, keeping water out for them, and learning to notice the ones that share this part of the Hill Country with us.

The painted bunting is the one that changed how I listen. Adult males look almost impossibly colorful, blue and red and green and yellow gathered into one small bird, and they are shy besides, quick to stay hidden. I wanted to see more of them, so I decided to learn their song.

Let Listening Tell You Where to Look

I used the free Merlin Bird ID app from the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, available for iPhone and Android. My method was relaxed, because I was already doing something I loved: reading outside. I would set the phone nearby with Sound ID listening to the birds around me, read for a while, check the screen, and pay close attention whenever Painted Bunting lit up in answer to a live song.

I never played calls to attract them. I was matching the app’s identification to songs already happening around me, and the repetition slowly taught my ear what to notice on its own.

One afternoon I was sitting on the porch when I recognized the song before the app told me anything. I looked up, and there the bird was. I was incredibly excited, and proud of myself in a way that surprised me. I had taught myself a useful way to find a bird that had once felt elusive.

And the wish that started it all, to simply see more of this beautiful bird, has come true. I see painted buntings regularly now. The listening gave me that.

A Gentle Way to Begin

If you want to learn the birds where you live, choose one bird you genuinely want to know. Listen from a respectful distance. Confirm what you hear with a field guide or an identification app, and notice the habitat, the time of day, the behavior. You do not need a special setup. You need curiosity and a little patience.

Learning a voice changes birdwatching from hoping something appears into knowing when to look. As Billy Strings sings in “Gild the Lily,” there is a longing to sing with the birds if only we knew the words. I may not know the words yet, but I am learning the voices, and the birds are teaching me.

With love and intention,

Jennifer
