Labor Day: Work That Supports the Life We Are Building

September 7, 2026

In our town, Labor Day belongs to the lake. It is the last summer hurrah before the schedules fully take over, and the whole place seems to lean toward the water together. Boats cut slow lines across the surface, coolers and folded towels pile onto the pale limestone shore, and the air carries the sound of people calling to one another across the waves. The heat has not read the calendar. It still feels like the middle of summer, and no one is pretending otherwise.

And yet the holiday is not really about the lake. Labor Day was set aside to honor work, the effort people pour into building something with their hands, their minds, and their time. That makes it a good day to ask an honest question: is the work we do supporting the life we are trying to build, or has the life quietly become support for the work?

Meaningful work can still take too much

I love my work, and I mean that. Botanic is something I have poured years into, and every part of it feels worth doing. Building the company, caring for the people we serve, and shaping the systems that let us grow without losing who we are. None of that feels like a waste of time.

But I will tell you a truth I keep learning the hard way. I am very good at working hard. I am also very good at playing hard, at throwing myself into the lake day, the long dinner, the concert, the trip. The part I am not good at is resting hard. Meaningful work has a way of expanding into every open space, not because I do not value my life, but because I do. I want the work to succeed so that the life can be beautiful, and somewhere inside that wanting, the work keeps winning the hours.

I am not saying the work is wrong, and I am not pretending a perfect balance is sitting somewhere just out of reach. I am saying the question is worth asking before the answer gets decided for us.

Work is for something

One of the quiet shifts I have made is changing how I measure what the work is for. For a long time the measure was mostly momentum: are we growing, are we moving, are we keeping the promises we made. Those still matter. But they are not the whole answer.

I want Botanic to be a company built on trust that lasts, on integrity, honesty, and kindness that we do not trade away for speed or profit. I want the business to keep its humanity as it grows, so that systems make us more dependable instead of less personal. A year ago a lot of this lived mostly as vision. Today I watch those values becoming real practices, the kind of foundation that can hold up the company we intend to become. That is work worth doing.

And I want that work to produce more than a company. I want it to produce a life: a peaceful home, strong relationships, time around the table, a garden that is tended, music in the house, and the knowledge that what we built helped other people build better lives of their own. Success that only shows up on a ledger is not the success I am chasing.

You do not have to give one up for the other

I used to hear people talk about work-life balance as though it were a scale that could only tip one way, as if a meaningful career and a beautiful life were competing for the same limited hours. I do not believe that anymore. What I believe is that you can build something real and still have a life around it, and that the two can feed each other instead of fighting.

It is not easy, and it is not a formula. It does not look the same for someone who is caregiving, studying, working more than one job, managing their health, or carrying responsibilities that cannot be set down. I am not going to pretend a lake day solves everyone’s week. But I do believe the question is worth asking out loud, because a lot of us have let the work quietly become the whole point without ever deciding that is what we wanted.

Honor the work, and the life it is for

So this Labor Day, I want to honor both things. I want to honor the work: the people who show up, the builders, the caregivers, the teachers, the makers, and everyone behind a counter, a desk, a classroom, or a field. Work done with care gives the world its shape.

And I want to honor the life that work is meant to support. The meal eaten slowly, the conversation that goes long, the water at the end of a hot day, the porch in the evening, the people who make the effort worth it. Rest is not the reward we finally earn after everything else is finished. It is part of the life the work was for in the first place.

I am still learning to protect that part. But I am naming it now, on a day built for both. Build something worth building, and build a life worth coming home to. They belong together.

With love and intention,

Jennifer
