First Day of Fall: When Fall Comes Later in Texas
September 22, 2026
Today marks the first day of fall on the calendar. Here in Texas, that does not always mean fall has arrived at the door.
September can still be very hot in Spicewood. School and regular schedules may be back in motion, but the weather has not received the same memo. The calendar can turn before the landscape does.
Fall does not really arrive here until November. October mornings and evenings can sometimes offer a hint that something is changing, but even Halloween can be hot or bring only a brief cool snap. That is simply the truth of this place.
Let the Day Tell the Truth
There is something freeing about letting a place be itself. September in the Hill Country is not a failed version of autumn. It is its own particular threshold, with summer heat still holding on while the calendar points toward what comes next.
Fall will come in its own time. Some years, an October morning carries a hint of it. Some years, the first convincing cool spell arrives later. I do not need to force the feeling before it is here.
That does not mean I have to ignore the turn of the calendar. Inside, I begin bringing in apples, deeper flavors, fall dishes, and a few small decorations. Those small choices are not a performance of a season we are not living. They are simply a way of saying that I am ready to notice what comes next.
Choose What Helps, Leave the Rest
For me, the most useful seasonal practice is a simple one: choose one small change that feels true to the life already happening around you.
It might be apples in a bowl, a familiar dish brought back to the table, or a small detail that helps you notice the date without asking your home or your weather to become something else. It might be nothing more than paying attention when an evening feels a little different.
The point is not to transform a whole house or create the right picture of fall. The point is to make room for the season honestly. Sometimes the first sign is not outside at all. Sometimes it is the decision to pay attention.
With love and intention,
Jennifer
