A heavy blanket can make a guest bed feel generous and warm. It can also turn the bed into one thick, immovable block if it is folded too tightly or trapped beneath too many layers.
Keep the sleeping layer simple
Start with clean, comfortable sheets and one blanket that can be pulled up without a wrestling match. If the blanket is very heavy, fold it at the foot of the bed rather than tucking all its weight tightly around the sleeper. The bed should be easy to adjust from either side.
Put the extra within reach
A lighter cover nearby gives guests a choice without requiring them to dismantle the bed. Place it over a chair or on an open shelf where it can be found, not in a closet full of household supplies. A small amount of visible readiness is kinder than a perfectly made bed that requires investigation.
Leave the room usable
One folded layer, a clear bedside surface, and a working lamp are enough. Make room for a glass of water and a book or phone. Hospitality is not a contest in textile volume; it is the reduction of small decisions for someone who has just arrived.
