How to Wash a Weighted Blanket Without Damaging It
October 21, 2026
A weighted blanket asks more of a washer than an ordinary blanket does. Its filling changes how much water the load holds, how freely it can move, and how much room it needs to rinse and dry properly.
Check what actually needs washing
Start with the care label and see whether the cover comes off. A removable cover may be the part that needs regular laundering, while the weighted insert may have a different cleaning requirement. Do not assume that the two pieces can be treated alike.
Match the blanket to the machine
Do not force a heavy blanket into a washer where it cannot move comfortably. An overloaded machine cannot clean or rinse well, and a wet, uneven load can put unnecessary strain on the appliance. If the label calls for a larger machine or professional cleaning, follow that instruction.
Plan the dry before you start
Know where the blanket will dry fully. Follow the label, support the weight evenly if the instructions call for air-drying, and check the center before folding it away. A blanket that feels dry on the surface may still need more time inside.
With heavy textiles, preparation is part of the wash. The machine is only one part of the decision.
With care,
Hazel
