Less Hurry, More Margin

September 5, 2026

There is a particular kind of hurry that follows us even when the calendar says weekend. Nothing may be urgently wrong, but the mind is already moving through the next message, the next errand, the next thing that could be finished before noon.

I know that rhythm well. I care about meaningful work, and I am grateful for a full life. Still, I do not want every open space to become proof that I can fit in one more thing.

Margin is more than an empty square

I used to think making room was mostly a scheduling question. If an hour was technically open, then surely I had margin. But an open hour can still be crowded with mental lists, notifications, and the feeling that it should produce something.

Real margin feels different. It is enough unclaimed attention to notice what the morning is actually like. It lets breakfast be breakfast instead of a meeting with a plate beside it. It lets a conversation continue past the efficient ending. It lets us choose what belongs in the space instead of giving it automatically to whatever is loudest.

Leave something unoptimized

Even the things we love can become another assignment. A book becomes a reading goal. A walk becomes a number to record. A creative practice becomes one more skill to improve. Before long, the life meant to restore us has acquired its own checklist.

This weekend, I want to leave something unoptimized. I may sit on the porch without deciding how long it should last. I may open a sketchbook without requiring a finished drawing. I may make a simple meal and let the conversation be the part worth remembering.

The point is not to perform slowness beautifully. It is to be present enough to recognize what is already good.

Make the invitation fit your life

Margin does not look the same for everyone. Some people have an open Saturday. Others are working, caregiving, studying, managing pain, or carrying responsibilities that cannot be set aside. A slower life is not created by pretending those realities are small.

Sometimes margin is an hour. Sometimes it is ten quiet minutes before the house wakes, one meal eaten sitting down, a phone left in another room during a conversation, or permission to stop after the necessary work is done. The size of the space matters less than whether we allow it to remain ours.

Let the weekend hold some life

I am not trying to remove effort, ambition, or responsibility from a meaningful life. I am trying to remember what all that effort is meant to support. Work matters. So do meals, laughter, music, creativity, fresh air, people we love, and moments that do not need to become useful later.

For this weekend, I am choosing one small pocket of time and refusing to fill it in advance. I want less hurry, not because life is empty, but because it is full of things worth being present for.

With love and intention,

Jennifer
