A Book for Building a Steadier Life
June 3, 2026
If I were choosing one book for building a steadier life, I would start with Braiding Sweetgrass. It feels like the first true Botanic Living library book, not because it gives a checklist, but because it teaches a way of seeing.
Gratitude, stewardship, and paying attention to the world around us are not abstract ideas to me. They show up in the garden, in the chickens, in the compost, in the kitchen, in the way a home is cared for, and in the way a business is built.
The book asks us to notice what has been given and to respond with care. That is steadiness.
Steadiness is not only emotional; it is practical. It is the habit of paying attention long enough to know what needs tending: what is growing, what is struggling, what is being wasted, what is being offered, what needs to be returned to the soil, what needs more water, and what needs time.
This is why I love books that become useful. I do not want Read to be a category full of impressive titles. I want it to be a place for ideas that shape how we live.
Right now, the idea I keep carrying is that small, consistent choices create extraordinary outcomes over time. Braiding Sweetgrass reminds me that attention is one of those small choices. Pay attention to the garden. Pay attention to the home. Pay attention to what you are building. Pay attention to what is already giving back.
That is a steadier way to live.
With love and intention,
Jennifer
