The Kind of Table People Remember
June 28, 2026
The table people remember is not always the fanciest one. I think it is usually the one where they felt seen. Heard. Welcomed.
Free to exhale. That is what I want people to feel in my home. Not judged. Not like they need to impress anyone. Not like they walked into a performance they have to match. Just welcomed. A comfortable chair. Good conversation. Something simple to eat. The sense that they belong there. That is hospitality to me. It does not have to be elaborate. Sometimes casual hosting looks like a charcuterie board, fresh fruit, chips and salsa, or whatever simple thing makes people feel comfortable gathering around the kitchen island.
I love when people gather while food is still being prepared. There is something disarming about it. The kitchen is being used. Someone is chopping. Someone is talking. Someone is standing nearby with a drink. Music is playing. The table may not be fully set yet, but people already feel part of the home. That matters more to me than presentation. I want people to remember how they felt.
That they were accepted. That they were included. That there was room for them. The older I get, the more I believe hospitality is less about impressing people and more about lowering the pressure in the room. Make something simple. Put flowers from the garden on the table if you have them. Play music. Let the conversation be real. Leave room for people to linger.
People may forget what was served. They may forget the plates. They may forget whether the kitchen was perfectly clean. But they will remember whether they felt welcome. That is the kind of table I want to build.
With love and intention,
Jennifer
