My Standards Changed, but the Scent Memory Stayed

October 24, 2026

The scent of Fabuloso can return me to my childhood home before I have time to think about why.

During the years my family lived near the United States-Mexico border, I remember us obtaining it in Mexico before I recall seeing it widely available in the stores around us. Its fragrance became connected in my mind with the routines of a house being cleaned and cared for.

My product standards have changed. The memory attached to the scent has not.

A folded cloth and unbranded purple-toned bottle rest in a sunlit home cleaning vignette.

Scent can become shorthand

A fragrance does not objectively prove that a room is clean. Cleanliness depends on what was removed, what was used, and whether the process was appropriate for the surface and situation. Still, our minds create associations through repetition.

If a certain scent appeared every time the floors were cleaned or the house was reset, the scent itself can eventually create the feeling that the work has been done. Years later, one breath brings back the room, the people, and the rhythm around it.

That is the power of scent memory. It can remain emotionally true even after our practical choices change.

Changing a standard does not erase affection

As I learned more and developed a clearer philosophy about household ingredients, I began making different choices. That does not require me to rewrite my childhood or pretend the fragrance means nothing to me now.

We can appreciate the care represented by an old household practice while deciding that our present standard is different. The people who raised us worked with the information, products, budgets, and availability they had. Respecting their care does not mean every choice must remain unchanged forever.

This distinction matters to me. Clean living should invite learning, not contempt. If a new standard makes us speak harshly about the homes that formed us, we may be confusing discernment with superiority.

Products live inside memory as well as routine

When people choose a household product, they are not evaluating ingredients and performance in a vacuum. They bring habits, expectations, family history, fragrance preferences, and a learned idea of what a cared-for home should feel like.

That complexity is part of why product development matters so much to me. A responsible product has to function in the real world, where sensory experience and emotional familiarity can be as powerful as the information on a label.

We should name those forces honestly. Fragrance can shape atmosphere and memory. It should not be confused with proof of sanitation or used to cover poor cleaning. Ingredient preferences can guide a choice without becoming fear-based claims about every alternative.

Let memory and growth coexist

I can smell Fabuloso and remember a cared-for childhood home. I can also choose a different direction for the products I use and the company I am building now.

Growth does not always require us to reject what came before. Sometimes it asks us to understand the memory, keep the love, and make the next decision with more information.

With love and intention,

Jennifer
