Tomato, Basil, and the Kind of Food Summer Gives You
July 8, 2026
Summer food is often best when we let the season lead. That does not always mean an elaborate recipe. Sometimes it means noticing what is already on the counter, what came from the garden, what needs to be used while it is still good, and what the weather is asking for. Tomatoes are showing up a few at a time right now. Not baskets and baskets, but enough that the house has to pay attention. Three or four tomatoes a day is more than our small family will eat in one day, so some get shared and some become the beginning of a meal.
That is the kind of abundance I like: not overwhelming, but generous enough to invite creativity. Tomatoes with basil. A little citrus. Olive oil. Salt. Something simple on a plate next to whatever else is happening for dinner. Cooking from what is here keeps the kitchen honest. It makes dinner feel connected to the season instead of disconnected from the life happening around it.
When summer gives you tomatoes, do not overthink it. Put them where people can see them. Let them become lunch, dinner, sauce, salad, or the thing you share with someone else.
With love and intention,
Jennifer
