What I Clear When the House Feels Loud
July 24, 2026
When the house feels loud, I start with one visible surface. Usually that means the kitchen island. It is the place that collects everything: mail, notebooks, business notes, garden plans, shopping bags, water bottles, and whatever project is active that day. It is useful because it is central, but that also means it can become visually loud fast. I do not always need a whole-house reset. Sometimes I need one place to stop shouting at me.
Clearing the island changes the way the entire kitchen feels. It makes it easier to cook. It makes it easier for people to gather. It makes the house feel like it has taken one deep breath. That is the kind of homekeeping I believe in. Not perfection, but support. The house should support the people living in it, and sometimes the most supportive thing is simply removing the clutter from the surface everyone sees first.
If a room feels overwhelming, choose one visible place. Clear that. Let the calm spread from there.
With love and intention,
Jennifer
