Hamilton Pool Preserve: What to Know Before You Go

September 20, 2026

Some places ask us to arrive with more preparation than a quick change of clothes and a good idea. Hamilton Pool Preserve is one of them. Its limestone grotto, waterfall, and shaded canyon have the kind of beauty that can make a person want to head out immediately, but the best way to enjoy a protected place is to let its rules and conditions lead the plan.

This is not a guaranteed swimming stop or a casual roadside pull-off. It is a nature preserve with limited access, changing water conditions, uneven terrain, and a landscape worth treating with patience. A little preparation makes room for the wonder without asking the place to absorb our hurry.

Start with the official reservation page

Travis County requires a reservation to enter Hamilton Pool Preserve every day of the year. The preserve lists a morning period from 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and an afternoon period from 2:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., with separate exit times after each. A reservation is not simply a formality. It is part of how the county manages visitation in a place with sensitive habitat and a narrow visitor window.

Check the official county page before making a plan. Fees, available times, and policies can change, and the county warns visitors to make reservations through its own website. It is also useful to remember that the online vehicle reservation and the arrival fee are separate charges, with cash required at the entrance for the per-person fee.

Let the swimming status be a possibility, not a promise

The pool is a striking destination, but a reservation does not guarantee swimming. Travis County bases swimming access on bacteria levels and recent rainfall, and conditions can change. There is no lifeguard, so visitors who do enter the water are responsible for their own judgment and safety.

The better expectation is to visit a living landscape, not to purchase a particular outcome. The waterfall, limestone, canyon vegetation, and changing light are part of the experience whether swimming is available or not. Checking the county’s current status before leaving home is a simple way to avoid disappointment and make a safer plan.

Pack for the walk, not just the photograph

The trail from the parking area to the pool is only about a quarter mile, but Travis County describes it as steep, narrow, rugged, and uneven. Sturdy shoes and enough water matter more here than a perfect outfit. The county estimates about 30 minutes for the round trip, which is a useful reminder to give the walk the attention it deserves.

Bring your own drinking water, too. There are portable toilets, but no drinking water, concessions, electricity, or running water for visitors. A small, practical bag and a willingness to carry out what you bring in are better companions than overpacking.

Remember that it is a preserve first

Hamilton Pool Preserve is 232 acres within the Balcones Canyonlands Preserve. Hamilton Creek moves over limestone into a waterfall and box canyon shaped through long water erosion. The county also describes upland oak and juniper savanna, canyon plant communities, birds, and ongoing restoration and monitoring work.

That context changes the way a visit feels. The rules around pets, glass, drones, fires, and other disruptions are not there to make a beautiful place less fun. They protect a place that has already carried heavy use and is still being cared for. The most memorable visit is usually the one that leaves the least behind.

Make room for a flexible day

Weather and water conditions are part of Hill Country life. Before heading out, check Travis County’s preserve page and its public information line for the latest closure, trail, and swimming information. If the plan needs to change, let it change. A nearby meal, a slower drive, or another day can still make room for the kind of attention that brought you out in the first place.

Hamilton Pool does not need us to rush through it to prove that we saw it. It invites a more useful kind of visit: prepared, observant, and willing to let a protected place set the pace.

With love and intention,

Jennifer
