From Oak Ridge to Townsend to Cades Cove and Knoxville: A Tennessee Birthday Trip

August 9, 2026

Some trips are memorable because of where you go. Others stay with you because of who is beside you. Our Tennessee trip gave us a little of both: quiet mountain roads, live music in unexpected places, a rain-soaked hike, a tiny black bear in a tree, and a birthday evening that ended behind the hidden door of a library speakeasy.

We began in Oak Ridge, where John had two days of work. I drove around, explored, and worked from a few different places, including the area around Melton Lake and Haw Ridge Park. Oak Ridge was interesting in pieces, but if I am honest, I also found it a little boring. Still, we ate well and found music. Our first night included dinner by the lake and a blues jam session. Another evening, we arrived too late to join musical bingo at a local brewery, but we stayed to watch the end and enjoyed seeing how much fun everyone was having.

Where the vacation really began

The vacation part of the trip began when we drove toward Townsend. The change was immediate. It was beautiful, romantic, peaceful, and quiet – the kind of place that gives you room to breathe.

That first evening, we ate hamburgers beside the Little River while a live band played. The water was remarkably clear, and the restaurant happened to be celebrating its first birthday, so we shared birthday cake with everyone there. We also stumbled across a Parrot Head fundraiser concert and listened to some Jimmy Buffett. Later we saw something I had especially hoped to see in the Smokies… synchronous fireflies!

The next day, we drove the Cades Cove loop. We saw three bears, including a tiny black bear cub with its mother up in a tree. Then we hiked to Abrams Falls. The hike was wonderful and the falls were beautiful. On the way out, a rainstorm drenched us completely. At that point, our choices were to stand there and get wet or keep hiking and get wet, so we kept going. We finished the loop, returned to the hotel, changed into dry clothes, and went for some pizza and a pretzel with beer cheese. We ended up meeting some friends and hanging out on the banks of Little River the rest of the evening.

The road we chose instead

The following morning, we drove back through Great Smoky Mountains National Park toward Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge. The park itself was beautiful. Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge were something else entirely. To me, they felt like Las Vegas for kids: traffic, attractions, signs, and people everywhere. It was overwhelming, and we were ready to find a quieter road.

We decided to look for Dolly Parton’s hometown. We stopped at her statue in Sevierville, then kept driving through the deep woods and mountain countryside. Of course, we listened to Dolly Parton songs during that drive – loving ‘My Tennessee Mountain Home’ and my personal favorite Dolly song, ‘Wildflowers’. The drive was so beautiful that we chose to follow those country roads all the way back toward Knoxville. It was not the most direct plan; it was simply the road we were enjoying most.

A birthday night in Knoxville

John had arranged a beautiful room for my birthday at The Tennessean Hotel. We walked around Market Square and ate a lovely dinner at Emilia. Afterward, we found a rooftop bar and then an open-mic night downstairs.

One of the performers walked up carrying a soprano ukulele like the one I play and began playing Grateful Dead songs. John and I are both Deadheads, so finding Grateful Dead music played on my instrument in the middle of my birthday evening felt like a small gift meant just for us. The open mic was hosted by singer Colleen D’Alelio, whose wonderful voice I will never forget.

We ended the night at the Peter Kern Library, a hidden speakeasy inside the Oliver Hotel. We found the four-digit passcode concealed in the hotel and used it to gain entry. Inside were dark navy walls, leather furnishings, a fireplace, chandeliers, low light, bookshelves, and a beautiful bar. We sat quietly at a table with a couple of cocktails and felt as though we had discovered a hidden pocket inside the hotel.

What I brought home

Looking back, I remember the clear river, the bear cub, the waterfall, the rain, the mountain roads, the music, and the secret passcode. But what the trip really reminded me is how much I love spending time with John. He is my best friend. It does not matter whether we are driving through the mountains, hiking in a storm, listening to a blues jam, or sitting in a quiet speakeasy. We always have fun together.

Maybe that is what makes a trip worth remembering. The place gives you the scenery, but the person beside you gives it meaning.

With love and intention,

Jennifer
