The Wool Blanket Care Guide I Wish People Had Before Winter

October 12, 2026

Wool is not difficult, but it is unforgiving of casual decisions. A blanket that only needs airing can be shrunk by an unnecessary wash, while a blanket with a real stain can be made harder to save by waiting without reading its care label.

Start with the label and the actual problem

If the blanket smells of storage, air it in a dry, shaded place. If it has dust, shake it gently outdoors or vacuum it through a suitable barrier. If it has a stain, blot rather than rub and check the care instructions before adding water.

Know when washing is not a home project

Some wool blankets can be washed as directed. Others need professional cleaning or a very specific method. Weight, construction, dyes, and finishing all matter. When the label says dry clean, believe it.

Drying is part of cleaning

Never put a heavy wet wool blanket on a hanger where it can stretch. Support it evenly and let it dry completely before folding it away.

Good wool care is mostly restraint. The blanket should be used, aired, and cleaned when it needs cleaning, not whenever the calendar suggests it.

A wool blanket decision path

  1. Clean and dry: air a clean blanket in a dry, shaded place and remove loose dust gently.
  2. Small mark: blot rather than rub, then check the care label before using water or any cleaner.
  3. Full wash: follow the exact label and machine instructions only when washing is permitted.
  4. Unknown or delicate construction: pause and consult the maker or a qualified cleaner.

Store the blanket only when it is fully dry, with enough room that it is not crushed into a damp corner. Wool care is a good example of why restraint is often the more useful method.

Before storing a wool blanket, check the care label rather than assuming it can be washed like a cotton throw. Air it in a dry, shaded place, spot-clean only where the label permits, and make sure it is completely dry before folding. Store it clean in a breathable container with room around it; compressed wool that goes into storage damp is much harder to rescue later.

Never seal a blanket into storage while it has a faint odor, even if the fabric feels dry. Give it more air and investigate the source before putting it away. Keep wool away from prolonged direct sun, rough cleaning, and crowded shelves that flatten its loft. When the blanket comes out again, inspect it before the first cold night so a repair or professional cleaning is not discovered at the moment it is needed.

With care,
Hazel
