A Laundry Basket Is Not a Storage System
October 29, 2026
A laundry basket can be excellent at carrying clothes and poor at everything else. Trouble begins when one container is expected to collect dirty laundry, sort colors, carry wet loads, hold clean clothes, and remain attractive in the corner.
Name the job before choosing the shape
A tall hamper may be useful for collecting. A light basket may be best for carrying. A broad, shallow container may help with clean clothes that need to be distributed. If clean and dirty clothes routinely share the same basket, the container is being asked to solve two different problems.
Measure the route, not just the laundry
Consider where the basket will live, how far it travels, and whether it can pass through the door without catching on the frame. A container that fits a large load but becomes too heavy to carry is not saving effort. Neither is one that blocks the path to the washer.
Buy the part that helps
My favorite laundry basket is the one that makes one stage of laundry easier. It does not need to become furniture, conceal a week’s worth of clothes, or perform every job in the room. Give each container a clear assignment and the laundry gets easier to see.
With care,
Hazel
