What the Garden Put In the Kitchen
May 28, 2026
The garden changes the kitchen. Even when the harvest is small. Even when it is just herbs, tomatoes, peppers, or whatever is ready. There is something different about cooking from what is actually here. It asks you to pay attention. It asks you to look before you decide. It makes the meal feel connected to the day, the weather, the season, and the work happening outside.
Right now, the garden is giving herbs, tomatoes, peppers, flowers, and whatever decided to volunteer on its own. I love that last part. The volunteers make the kitchen feel less controlled and more alive. Summer food, to me, should be fresh, simple, and not require heating the house more than necessary. The things I reach for this time of year are herbs, citrus, cast iron cookware, wooden cutting boards, and simple serving bowls.
That is enough to make a lot of meals feel cared for. A handful of herbs changes grilled chicken. Tomatoes and citrus can brighten a salad. Peppers can find their way into taco bowls. A simple bowl can make whatever is ready feel like it belongs on the table. This is what I want Nourish to hold inside Botanic Living. Not complicated food for the sake of content. Food that belongs to a real kitchen. Food connected to the garden. Food that supports a home where people are moving in different directions and still need to be fed.
The garden does not have to produce a perfect harvest to matter. Sometimes it puts just enough in the kitchen to change the meal. Sometimes that is the lesson. Use what is here. Cook from the season you are actually in. Let simple things count.
With love and intention,
Jennifer
