What the Garden Is Teaching Me Right Now
June 4, 2026
Right now, the garden is teaching me about pace. Tomatoes. Peppers. Herbs. Flowers. Whatever decided to volunteer on its own. Some things are thriving. Basil and peppers usually handle the Texas heat well. Other things are struggling, because anything that underestimates a Texas summer is going to have a hard time. The garden tells the truth quickly. It does not care what I hoped would happen. It responds to heat, water, soil, timing, and care. It shows me what is working and what needs to be adjusted. I need that kind of honesty.
There are so many places in life where we want the vision to arrive faster than reality can support it. We want the harvest without the season. We want proof before the roots have had time to grow. The garden refuses to work that way. It asks for attention. It asks for consistency. It asks for patience. It also leaves room for surprise. The volunteers remind me that not everything good comes from the plan. Sometimes something grows because of what was planted before. Sometimes something shows up on its own and still belongs. That feels hopeful to me. The work is to keep tending:
- Water what needs water.
- Notice what is thriving.
- Adjust what is struggling.
- Accept the heat.
- Let the season teach you.
Growth has a pace, and not all of it can be controlled. That is frustrating sometimes. It is also freeing.
With love and intention,
Jennifer
