Why Towels Smell Musty and What to Do About It
July 29, 2026
A freshly washed towel should not smell stale as soon as it becomes damp. When it does, the answer is often found in the routine: how the towel dries between uses, how the washer is loaded, how detergent is measured, and whether the towel is completely dry before storage.
Four places to check
- Between-use drying: spread towels over a bar or rack so air reaches more of the fabric. A towel left bunched on a hook or floor stays damp longer.
- Washer loading: towels need room to move. Follow the machine manufacturer’s capacity guidance rather than packing the drum tightly.
- Detergent amount: measure according to the detergent label and your load and water conditions. More detergent is not automatically more effective.
- Complete drying: thick hems and folded edges can remain damp after the main fabric feels dry. Check them before folding towels into a cabinet.
Reset the routine
Rewash musty towels using the warmest water permitted by the care label, the correct amount of detergent, and an appropriate cycle. Dry them promptly and completely. If the odor remains, repeat the wash before using the dryer again. Clean and maintain the washer according to its manual, including the detergent dispenser, door seal, filter, and cleaning cycle when applicable.
If the odor returns
Work through the routine in order before adding another product. Confirm that the washer is not overloaded, detergent is measured correctly, towels are removed promptly, and thick hems dry completely. If the smell continues, inspect the washer according to its manual and look for a damp storage spot, a crowded hamper, or a towel that is repeatedly left bunched between uses.
The related question is often timing rather than chemistry. A useful linen schedule is covered in How Often Should You Wash Towels and Bedding?.
Do not combine laundry additives or household chemicals unless the product labels explicitly permit the combination. In particular, never mix chlorine bleach with vinegar, ammonia, or other cleaners.
A cornerstone check for musty towels
The most useful question is not only whether the towel was washed. It is where the odor returns.
- It smells fresh when dry but musty when damp: focus first on between-use drying, complete drying after washing, detergent amount, and washer loading.
- It smells stale before washing: inspect the hamper, the towel’s storage location, and how long it remains compressed while damp.
- It smells immediately after washing: check the washer’s care routine, the selected cycle, the load size, and whether the towel was removed promptly.
- It still smells after a careful reset: stop adding products and look for a persistent damp-storage or machine-maintenance problem. Replace the item only after the routine and the care label have been considered.
Do not treat a stronger fragrance as proof that the towel is clean. Fragrance can cover an odor without changing the drying or residue problem that brought it back.

With care,
Hazel
Start with the drying problem before reaching for a stronger product. Spread the towel out after use, improve air movement, and avoid filling the washer so tightly that the fabric cannot rinse and dry. If the smell returns as soon as the towel becomes damp, inspect the washer, detergent amount, and storage conditions together. A scent that survives repeated laundering is information about the whole system, not just the towel.
