How Often Should You Wash Towels and Bedding?
July 22, 2026
There is no single laundry schedule that fits every household. Climate, ventilation, skin conditions, illness, pets, personal preference, and how an item is used all affect when it needs washing. A practical rhythm is better than a rigid rule.
A useful starting point
- Bath towels: after about three uses, sooner if they stay damp, develop an odor, or are shared.
- Hand towels and kitchen towels: every few days, or sooner when visibly soiled or used for spills.
- Sheets: about once a week is a useful baseline; adjust for your household.
- Pillowcases: weekly, or more often when personal needs call for it.
- Duvet covers: every few weeks when used over a top sheet, and more often without one.
- Comforters and washable blankets: seasonally or when visibly soiled, following the care label and machine-capacity limits.
- Mattress and pillow protectors: periodically and after spills, according to their care labels.
Drying matters as much as timing
Hang towels so air can circulate instead of leaving them folded while damp. Move washed linens to the dryer or drying rack promptly. Before putting them away, make sure thick seams, elastic edges, and layered corners are fully dry.
Always read the textile care label, measure detergent according to its label, and avoid overloading the washer. The right cycle and complete drying will do more for a linen routine than chasing a perfect calendar.
With care,
Hazel
