Why Towels Smell Musty and What to Do About It

A freshly washed towel should not smell stale as soon as it becomes damp. When it does, the answer is often found in the routine: how the towel dries between uses, how the washer is loaded, how detergent is measured, and whether the towel is completely dry before storage.
Four places to check
- Between-use drying: spread towels over a bar or rack so air reaches more of the fabric. A towel left bunched on a hook or floor stays damp longer.
- Washer loading: towels need room to move. Follow the machine manufacturer’s capacity guidance rather than packing the drum tightly.
- Detergent amount: measure according to the detergent label and your load and water conditions. More detergent is not automatically more effective.
- Complete drying: thick hems and folded edges can remain damp after the main fabric feels dry. Check them before folding towels into a cabinet.
Reset the routine
Rewash musty towels using the warmest water permitted by the care label, the correct amount of detergent, and an appropriate cycle. Dry them promptly and completely. If the odor remains, repeat the wash before using the dryer again. Clean and maintain the washer according to its manual, including the detergent dispenser, door seal, filter, and cleaning cycle when applicable.
Do not combine laundry additives or household chemicals unless the product labels explicitly permit the combination. In particular, never mix chlorine bleach with vinegar, ammonia, or other cleaners.
