A Holiday Can Be Simple

A holiday can be simple and still feel like a holiday. That is what I want to remember going into the Fourth of July. I love the fun parts: flags, patriotic music, red-white-and-blue food, strawberry and blueberry desserts, fireworks, and that feeling that summer is fully here. I do not love making a holiday so complicated that everyone is tired before it begins.
Around here, the best July days usually involve water. Lake Travis is beautiful in a very Texas way, with limestone cliffs, Hill Country hills, coves, shade, and places where the cliffs drip water and ferns hang down. If the lake is busy, the right choice is usually not to force the water sports. It is to cruise slowly, find a quiet cove, anchor, and let everybody float around.
The food does not have to be impressive. Sometimes it is gas station snacks, drinks in an ice chest, and whatever fruit is already on the counter. That can be enough. The point is not to prove anything. The point is to make the day easy to enjoy. I like a holiday that feels fun, relaxed, nostalgic, and family-oriented. A little decor, a little music, something cold to eat, somewhere to cool off, and fireworks at the end if the day allows it.
Simple does not mean careless. It means we leave room for people to breathe, laugh, and actually remember the day.
