The Soundtrack of a Summer House
July 18, 2026
What fills a room shapes the way the room feels. That is true of clutter, light, scent, food, conversation, and music. A house has an atmosphere whether we choose it or not, and I would rather choose it. In summer, I like a house that feels alive but not frantic. Windows, plants, coffee, something simple on the counter, maybe the sound of music moving through the kitchen while food is being made or people are coming in and out.
Music can change the pace of a room. It can make cooking feel more creative, cleaning feel less tedious, and gathering feel more natural. It is one of the easiest ways to tell the house what kind of day we are having. I do not think home should be silent unless silence is what we need. I think it should be chosen. Some days that means music. Some days it means quiet. Some days it means everybody talking around the island and nothing else is needed.
The point is to pay attention to what the room is holding, then choose what belongs there.
With love and intention,
Jennifer
