The Dishwasher Filter Is Not a Trash Can
October 26, 2026
When a dishwasher filter is full of yesterday’s food soil, the machine is starting each load with yesterday’s leftovers. The filter is designed to catch debris, not to become a permanent collection of it.
Find the controlling instruction
Turn the dishwasher off, then check the appliance manual for the filter location and removal method. Models differ, and a part that twists out on one machine may not be handled the same way on another. The manual is more useful here than a confident guess.
Contain what you remove
Place a tray or cloth beneath the work area. Remove loose debris according to the instructions, then rinse or clean the filter as directed. Look around the filter well for pieces that do not belong there, but do not pry at a stuck part or reach farther into the machine than the manual allows.
Know when to stop
If the filter will not release, a part is cracked, or the dishwasher still drains poorly after the approved cleaning, stop improvising. Consult the manual or a qualified service professional. Maintenance is useful when it respects the machine. The goal is not to take everything apart. It is to keep the right part doing its job.
With care,
Hazel
