What I Put Away First When September Ends
September 30, 2026
I like the end of September because it gives the house a chance to change its mind without drama. The season does not need a grand farewell. It needs a few honest shifts so October can arrive without competing with leftover summer habits.
The first things I put away are usually the ones that no longer match the way the house wants to function. Light seasonal pieces, a couple of outdoor items, the things that have stopped getting used, and any decor that is only still visible because nobody has had the nerve to move it yet.
Put away what no longer gets reached for
If a throw, tray, or seasonal object has stopped earning its place, it can go. I prefer to start with the items that make the room feel just a little too full for the weather we are actually having.
Clear the surfaces that need to hold the next season
When September ends, the house often needs a little more open space, not less. Removing one or two seasonal extras can make the room feel ready for October before the calendar does.
Use the pack-up as a small cleaning moment
This is a good time to wipe the shelf, basket, or closet space where the seasonal things live. A Botanic cleaner bottle belongs naturally in that sweep because the handoff between seasons is also a maintenance moment.
Leave one clear sign that the month has changed
I do not need to make the house look haunted by transition. I just want it to feel like we have moved on. The first things I put away should make that obvious.
Give each item a destination before you put it away: a labeled bin, a closet shelf, a donation bag, or the recycling. Wash and dry textiles before storage, but do not pack them so tightly that air cannot move. A short note on the container can save you from opening every box next September to find one tablecloth or a strand of lights.
With care,
Hazel
