Ten Signs of Late August in the Texas Hill Country

August 30, 2026

The phrase “dog days” comes from Sirius, the Dog Star, not from dogs lying on cool concrete. I know that. But by late August in Spicewood, the concrete version is the one I believe. It is the season’s most honest description: so hot that all you want to do is lie down on something cool, like a dog, and wait for the sun to soften its hold.

Late August announces itself in details, and after nineteen years here I have learned to read them.

The Signs I Look For

The landscape turns dry and crispy, and the rain mostly gives up. What green remains stays close to the irrigated ground, the shaded pockets, and the plants tough enough to hold their color. The heat lingers after sunset, thick instead of releasing with the day, so the evenings ask for a different kind of patience.

The days begin earlier. Garden walks, errands, and outdoor work all move toward the first hours of light, when the air still has some manners. By mid-morning the sun has taken over, and the porch fans work hard to make the difference between lingering outside and retreating indoors.

Rain, when it comes, feels consequential. A summer shower can change the smell and temperature of an entire afternoon, even when it does not end the dryness. Cold food makes sense now: lighter dinners, iced drinks, and freezer treats fit the weather better than pretending the season has changed.

The Lake Calls

These are the days when the strongest instinct is to jump into Lake Travis, even though by late August the water can feel as warm as bath water. You get in anyway, because the water is still the best answer the season offers. The limestone shoreline tells the water story too, with the lake line moving as the reservoir rises and falls through the summer.

How We Adapt

Adaptation beats complaint, and this season asks for it in every practical way: earlier mornings, later evenings, lighter meals, more time at the lake, and air-conditioning when the house needs it. School rhythms have begun again even though the calendar says summer, and the two do not quite match. That is late August in Texas: the schedules change while the heat stays fully present.

Late August is not asking us to decorate for another season. It is asking us to live around the heat, to shift our meals and our hours and our expectations to match the weather we actually have, and to find the small pleasures that make the waiting bearable.

With love and intention,

Jennifer
