Beyond the Classic S’more: Sweet and Savory Combinations for the Fire Pit
August 28, 2026
A classic s’more is hard to improve: graham cracker, toasted marshmallow, and chocolate. But the fire pit also invites experimenting. Set out a few choices, let everyone build their own, and dessert becomes part of the gathering rather than something prepared away from it.
These combinations are on my try-next list. I have been collecting ideas all summer, and I plan to work through them one campout at a time. Start with one or two rather than turning the table into a project.
Sweet Combinations
- Salted dark chocolate: Graham cracker, dark chocolate, toasted marshmallow, and a tiny pinch of flaky salt.
- Peanut butter cup: Graham cracker, peanut butter cup, and toasted marshmallow.
- Strawberry shortcake: Shortbread cookie, white chocolate, toasted marshmallow, and a thin slice of strawberry added after toasting.
- Banana caramel: Graham cracker, milk chocolate, toasted marshmallow, a thin banana slice, and a small drizzle of caramel.
Sweet-and-Savory Combinations
- Pretzel crunch: Pretzel crisps, dark chocolate, and toasted marshmallow.
- Maple bacon: Graham cracker, milk or dark chocolate, toasted marshmallow, and a small piece of crisp bacon.
- Hot honey: Graham cracker, dark chocolate, toasted marshmallow, and the lightest drizzle of hot honey.
- Cheddar apple: Sturdy cracker, thin sharp cheddar, a warm apple slice, and a small toasted marshmallow for a sweet-savory finish.
Make It a Table, Not a Project
I keep the toppings on a tray, the roasting forks long, and the marshmallows close enough to the fire to do their work without anyone hovering over the flame. I set the bowls out with their names on them so everyone knows what they are reaching for. The pleasure is not finding one definitive upgrade. It is passing ingredients around the fire and discovering which combination earns another round.
With love and intention,
Jennifer
