A Better Place for Wet Coats, Umbrellas, and Dog Towels
October 20, 2026
On a rainy day, the entryway becomes a second laundry room. A coat lands on the nearest chair, an umbrella leans beside the kitchen table, and a dog towel stays on the floor because nobody has chosen a better place for it.
Give wet things a landing place
Set up a small drying zone near the entrance, with a washable mat or tray beneath the drips. Use sturdy hooks for coats, a tray for umbrellas, and an open basket or bar for towels. Leave enough space between the items for air to move. The arrangement should be easy to empty when the weather clears.
Keep drying separate from storage
An open umbrella needs room to drain. A damp coat needs to hang freely. A towel needs to be spread or hung rather than buried in a basket. A closed cabinet or lidded bin hides moisture instead of helping it leave. Follow the care directions for delicate materials.
Let the system disappear
When everything is dry, return the items to their ordinary homes and empty the tray. A temporary arrangement earns its place by making a wet day easier, then getting out of the way.
With care,
Hazel
