Lake Travis, Fireworks, and Simple Summer Joy

The Fourth of July on Lake Travis can feel like the middle of summer in the best possible way. The lake is all limestone cliffs, rolling Hill Country hills, coves, water, and heat. It can be busy, so the rhythm changes. On quieter days there may be wakesurfing. On a holiday, it is often better to move slowly, find a shaded cove, anchor, and let the day be what it is.
I love the coves where the cliffs make shade and the water drips down with ferns hanging from the rock. Everybody parks their boats, anchors down, and floats around. It feels simple, local, and very much like home. Our lake food is usually not complicated. Drinks and snacks from the gas station, fruit from the counter, and everything packed into an ice chest. That is part of the fun. Nobody is trying to host a perfect event on the water. We are just trying to make it easy for everyone to enjoy the day.
The fireworks are beautiful because you can see them from so many places. Big shows over the lake, families setting off their own fireworks, little towns sparkling across the hills. It feels wide and festive and nostalgic. I like a holiday that makes room for family, water, music, food, and wonder. That is enough.
