Hazel’s Homekeeping Guide

The Right Order for Cleaning Your Kitchen

July 21, 2026

When kitchen cleaning feels endless, the problem is often the sequence rather than the amount of work. A good order prevents you from wiping the same counter twice or sweeping before crumbs have finished falling.

Begin with what does not belong

Put away food first, then gather dishes and remove unrelated items from the room. You do not need to organize every cabinet. The goal is to expose the surfaces that actually need cleaning.

Work from high to low

  1. Clear food, dishes, and clutter.
  2. Dust or wipe obvious crumbs from higher ledges and small appliances.
  3. Clean the stovetop after it has cooled, following its manufacturer instructions.
  4. Wipe backsplashes, appliance fronts, cabinet touch points, counters, and the table with products suitable for those materials.
  5. Clean the sink after the dishes and surface debris have been handled.
  6. Sweep or vacuum the floor, then damp-clean it only when needed and according to the flooring manufacturer’s directions.

Use separate cloths when moving between especially greasy areas and relatively clean surfaces. Never mix cleaning products. If a product label calls for rinsing, ventilation, gloves, or a particular application method, follow those directions exactly.

Stop at clean, not perfect

A correctly cleaned kitchen does not require every cabinet interior or appliance crevice to be handled each time. Daily cleaning addresses food, dishes, spills, and touch points. Deeper tasks can rotate through the month. A clear sequence keeps ordinary care manageable.

With care,

Hazel
