What August Feels Like At Home

August 7, 2026

The first honest answer is air-conditioning. Walking into a properly cool house after being outside in a Texas August feels wonderful. The relief is immediate: cool air, cold water, and a moment to stop carrying the heat on your skin.

At home, August also sounds like the wall-mounted fans turning on the screen porch. It looks like iced tea on the counter and banana cream popsicles waiting in the freezer. We are not pretending the season is already fall. We are learning how to live well inside the heat we actually have.

Four kinds of ice

Our family has a deliberately silly way of restoring perspective when someone starts complaining: “In this house, we have four kinds of ice.”

We really do. There are regular cubes, crushed ice, small chewable pellet ice, and large round ice. It is ridiculous enough to make us laugh, which is the point. We once talked about what that abundance means, and now everyone understands the phrase. We are fortunate. We have what we need. We can pause before treating a temporary irritation like a crisis.

Gratitude does not require us to deny that August is hot or that the day has been difficult. It simply helps us notice what is also true: the house is cool, the fans are moving, there is something cold to drink, and there may even be a frozen treat waiting.

That is what August feels like at home right now: physical relief paired with gratitude, and enough humor to remember both.

Recipe

Banana Pudding Popsicles

These creamy banana pudding popsicles bring together ripe bananas, vanilla, and a little sweetened condensed milk for a cool treat on the hottest August afternoons.

Yield: 6 small popsicles
Prep time: 15 minutes
Freeze time: At least 6 hours, preferably overnight

Ingredients

  • 2 ripe bananas
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1/4 cup plain Greek yogurt
  • 14 oz. can sweetened condensed milk
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract or vanilla paste
  • Pinch of sea salt

Instructions

  1. Add the bananas, milk, heavy cream, Greek yogurt, sweetened condensed milk, vanilla, and salt to a blender.
  2. Blend until completely smooth.
  3. Let the mixture rest for 5 minutes so the banana flavor rounds out.
  4. Blend once more for the smoothest texture.
  5. Divide among six small popsicle molds and insert sticks.
  6. Freeze for at least 6 hours, or overnight, until solid.
  7. To unmold, briefly run warm water over the outside of each mold, then pull gently.

Serving and Storage

Serve directly from the freezer. If the popsicles are very firm, let them stand at room temperature for 2 to 3 minutes. Store them in the molds, or transfer unmolded popsicles to an airtight freezer-safe container separated with parchment. They have the best texture within 2 weeks.

Optional Variations

For a sweeter version, taste the blended base and add 1 tablespoon maple syrup or honey if needed. Frozen desserts taste less sweet than the unfrozen mixture.

For a stronger banana-pudding finish, sprinkle up to 2 tablespoons total crushed seed-oil-free vanilla wafers into the molds before adding the mixture. The crumbs will soften during freezing.

With love and intention,

Jennifer
