How I’d Wash Hoodies and Sweatshirts for the Long Season Ahead
September 15, 2026
Hoodies and sweatshirts are the clothes that make fall feel official. They also ask for a little more care than many people give them. The fabric is often heavier. The seams take more wear. The inside can pill. The outside can lose shape if the garment is handled as though it were just another T-shirt.
For me, the goal is simple: keep them comfortable, keep them presentable, and keep them in the rotation for as long as the season needs them.
Start by checking the label and the fabric
Not every hoodie or sweatshirt wants the same treatment. Read the care label first. Some garments can handle a normal wash. Some prefer cooler water or a gentler cycle. Some are better dried with more care than heat. The label is the first decision, not a formality.
Turn them inside out
Inside-out washing helps protect the outer surface from unnecessary abrasion. That matters when the garment has a printed front, a textured finish, or a fabric that likes to pill. It is a small step that often pays for itself by making the clothes look better longer.
Do not overload the machine
Thick layers need room to move. A stuffed machine does not clean the garments as well, and it can leave them holding more moisture than they should. Give hoodies and sweatshirts enough space that the wash can actually reach all the fabric.
Dry them with patience
Heat is not always the answer. Sometimes a sweatshirt wants a gentler dry or a little extra time on a rack. That is where the season gets practical again. A garment that stays in shape and feels comfortable is worth more than one that comes out faster but wears out sooner.
Hoodies and sweatshirts are not difficult. They just deserve the kind of care that keeps them looking like clothes you want to wear, not clothes you tolerated through a season.
With care,
Hazel
