Summer Food Should Be Useful
June 6, 2026
Summer food should be useful. Fresh. Simple. Not requiring the house to be heated more than necessary. That is the kind of food I want most when the days are hot and full. The things that keep showing up are eggs, avocados, berries, tomatoes, chicken, citrus, herbs, and salad greens. The pantry staples do their quiet work in the background: olive oil, spices, beans, rice, broth, coffee, and baking essentials. With those things, a lot can happen. Taco bowls when everyone is going different directions. Grilled chicken, roasted vegetables, and a salad when life is full. Herbs from the garden. Citrus squeezed over something simple. Fruit on the counter. A bowl that can become lunch without turning the whole kitchen upside down. I love beautiful food, but I do not want summer food to become fussy. Summer has enough heat of its own.
The garden is already doing work. The house is already full of life. People are coming and going. The kitchen needs to support the season, not compete with it. That is one of the reasons I like keeping simple things close: fresh herbs, citrus, cast iron cookware, wooden cutting boards, and simple serving bowls. These are the things that make a kitchen feel ready without making it feel complicated. Food can be generous without being elaborate. It can be practical and still beautiful. It can meet the day where it is. That is what I want summer food to do.
With love and intention,
Jennifer
