The October Things I Leave Unfinished on Purpose
October invites a certain kind of household overconfidence. The weather changes, the calendar fills, and suddenly every closet, textile, and outdoor object appears to demand a decision before November arrives.
I leave some things unfinished on purpose. Not neglected, and not forgotten. Simply waiting for the information or season that will make the next step sensible.
I do not store what is still being used
If a light blanket, patio chair, or open-window habit still belongs to the actual weather, it can stay. A seasonal date is not a command to make the house pretend. Put away what is finished, but leave useful things available.
I do not create a maintenance project from one observation
A draft, a sticking door, or a dusty vent may deserve attention. It does not always need to become a whole-house campaign that same afternoon. I write the note, decide whether the issue affects safety or function, and choose the right next step.
I let November tell me what it needs
Good homekeeping is responsive. Some work becomes clearer when the season has actually arrived and the house has shown us what changed. An unfinished task is not a failure if it is safely waiting for its proper moment.
With care,
Hazel
